Flaws and imperfections give a character somewhere to go - the character arc - in which a character develops and grows, overcoming obstacles and gaining knowledge and wisdom and is recreated and restored to wholeness. A real character is not just a single obvious trait, but a unique combination of many qualities and drives, some of them. And if you read wholeness in place of holiness everywhere you find it in the Bible you will be much closer to what the writers of that book meant. We all know what wholeness is: It is to have together all the parts which were intended to be there, and to have them functioning as they were intended to function. That is what God is talking about.

The soul-salving art of bridging that gap is what Parker Palmer explores in A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life (public library) — an ennobling field guide to living with the grace and integrity of being your whole self, titled after the famous Thomas Merton line, “there is in all things a hidden wholeness.”.

In his book titled The Force of Character and the Lasting Life, James Hillman, psychologist, lecturer, and author of more than 20 books, challenges us to reframe our ideas about aging and the role of character in our culture. His goal is "to restore the ancient link between older age and the uniqueness of character.". The bully story is a close 2nd. They struggle with Pete, who is violent and a thief through this whole book, and at the end, Hilda finds a way to make peace with him that will surprise you. This book is a delight. We always have a hard time putting it down each night. Here are a few quotes from the book. “The new Mama laughed. “Nonsense.
